Django

FR - EN

Django is an open-source web framework that is available for free and which is used by millions of coders and web developers around the world. It is written in the Python programming language and can be used to create massive websites and apps, as well as by those just starting out with their projects. Since its inception, the creators of Django have set out to help make complex websites easier to build by minimising code and using shortcuts and components that can be quickly 'plugged' in.

History: Origin and evolution

Django was initially created in 2003 by two programmers called Adrian Holovaty and Simon Willison who were using Python to create projects. It was then publicly released two years later and has been free to download ever since. The name Django came from a Belgian musician called Jean Django Reinhardt who was clearly a favourite of the two developers. Django is open source which is a huge factor in its secure nature, its high scalability, and its ease of use.

Who uses Django?

Django is used by millions of people and companies and this includes some huge names. Here are a few of the most popular websites that use Django. Disqus, one of the worlds biggest blog commenting sites which has over 50 million global users. BitBucket, an alternative repository site to GitHub. Instagram, the world's largest photo-sharing site has used Django in the past. Google's number one competitor Mozilla Firefox has utilised Django with their millions of users. NASA, the United States' space agency has used Django to build elements of their website. As you can see there is a wide range and this is only a small sample of those that have utilised the technology to build their website.

Pros and cons of Django

Pros

Its fast - websites and apps can be up and running quickly
Plenty of extras - it includes things like sitemaps, authentication, admin, right out of the box
Security is paramount
Scalable - some of the biggest websites use it

Cons

Convention issues when compared to other languages such as Ruby
Need to have knowledge of Python
May not be the right tool for static one-page websites

The Advantages of Using Django

Most websites operate using basic functionalities which Django provides for users without them having to build their own from scratch. Things like URL routes, security, and user authentication (among others) are provided pre-built by Django. Django is tried and tested, can be used to create everything from small side projects to massive websites that can handle millions of users. There is an active community which is great for turning to for help if a user ever needs it and there are new improvements and additions being made all the time.
