Ruby-On-Rails

Ruby on Rails is a web application framework. It is written in the programming language Ruby, and applied to the model view controller Rails, which is used to structure web pages and databases. it also encourages the use of other popular software engineering patterns, and has had a great deal of influence on the ever-growing world of apps. Other web frameworks, such as Django in Python, have borrowed many ideas from Ruby on Rails. 

History

Ruby on Rails was first released in July 2004 by David Heinemeier Hansson, as open source software, after working on the project management program Basecamp (which is run using Ruby on Rails). The most recent version, Rails 5.2, was released in April 2018. 

Who uses Ruby on Rails? 

It is currently estimated that over 1.2 million websites are using the Ruby on Rails framework. These include Airbnb and Hulu, although it is also a popular choice for many small websites. 

Pros and Cons

There is a clear framework when building a website using Ruby on Rails. The principle of "Convention over Configuration" leads the user into the best ways of doing many things, and the underlying philosophy of "Don't Repeat Yourself" ensures that all of the necessary information only needs to be stored in one place. This allows the database to be smaller, so less memory and time is required. The modular aspect of Ruby on Rails means that it can also be extended easily when this is required.

Ruby on Rails keeps up to date with all of the best industry standards, including security, updates, and quickly fixing issues that arise. However, its run speed can be slower than other frameworks that are performing a similar function, and this has led to Twitter replacing some of their Ruby on Rails components with other options, in order to keep up with the demand from users once the popularity of the website increased.

Why use Ruby on Rails?

The framework and associated guidance makes building a website or application using Ruby on Rails relatively quick and easy; it has been described as simple to learn. There are many modules available on the open source network, which means it is unlikely that new code will need to be written specifically for a project, and it is easy to maintain the apps once they have been built.
