PERL

FR - EN

“Perl” is the name given to a family of high-level, general-purpose programming languages. The family has two distinct branches, Perl 5 and Perl 6. Despite sharing a similar name, these continue to evolve independently of each other.

As a scripting language, Perl has dozens of potential uses. However, in the realm of web development it is best known for its CGI script development capabilities.

Perl has a reputation for being straightforward, easy to learn, and easy to use. It has also built a reputation as a time-saver. This is partly because Perl has “striking parallels” with natural language, possibly because its inventor Larry Wall was himself a linguist. As such, Perl is known for being a highly intuitive system.

A crucial feature of Perl is the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN), which allows others to read and use new code. The code is often so dense that it’s virtually unusable. Nevertheless, this transparency has secured Perl a firm place in the popularity index.

Origins and History

Perl dates back to 1987, when Larry Wall developed a language that would fill a strange niche between highly in-depth languages (such as C), and rapid languages such as AWK.

Standing for Practical Extraction and Report Language, Perl underwent a steady evolution before it reached the benchmark launch of Perl 5 in 1994.

Perl has become something of a cult classic. Its three unofficial and official logos – a dromedary camel, an onion, and a raptor – are widely seen within the Perl community, particularly amongst its legions of hacking devotees.

Who uses Perl?

Perl 5 was once the darling of mission critical projects in both the public and private sectors. Support has faded in recent years, with rivals such as Python rising to dominance. Perl 5 is found on most intrawebs, data mining programs, UNIX, and in security.

In fact, we’ve probably all encountered it. IMDB, Amazon, and the BBC iPlayer all use Perl 5.

Perl 6, although still something of a new kid on the block, is famously used by Catalyst. Whilst Perl 6 has yet to live up to its hype, many commentators think that it has great things to offer, and will eventually eclipse its rivals.

Pros and Cons of Perl

Perl has several pros. It is similar to Shell language, and uses familiar approaches such as braces. It’s both very powerful and highly versatile. This versatility means that it can be used for many applications, whether they be imperative, procedural, functional, or determined by the object. In other words, whatever you need to do, Perl can almost certainly give you the language to achieve it.

The downsides are mostly to do with untidiness. Perl offers multiple options for achieving the same outcome, and this can leave users with an unwieldy spaghetti-plate of a mess. This can slow the process down, and causes problems for lengthy codes.

Advantages of using Perl for web hosting

Despite rivalry from its competitors, Perl remains a firm favourite. There are many reasons for this.

Perl is stable, and while it is platform independent, it’s also highly compatible. It enhances this by being focused upon integration. This integration also includes being able to work with different formats, such as HTML, XML, and PDF.

Perl is an open source software, which means that it is available under the GNU General Public License.

In short, Perl is functional, accessible, and does what it says on the tin.
